it's April, like.

Oh my! Oh my! It's April! I have officially been in Ireland for 3 months. And, I now only have one left! Can you believe it? I really can't. Time has actually flown by here. Like, I feel like I have been here for a long time, but at the same time, I can't believe that it's almost over. Such a weird feeling. I can't really explain it, so I won't even really try! hah! But, in less than a month from today I will be on a plane flying home. Oh man! Shocking, I know!

I haven't really posted too many of these lately because my life has been filled with writing final papers for my classes. I guess that's my punishment for not really doing any work during the semester. But, it's not too bad, and I am pretty much almost done. I have to finish them up before Wednesday because that is when we leave for a 12 day Spring Break trip! Where are we going you wonder? Well...First stop to Venice, then onto Florence, then a little trip to Rome. When we have conquered Italy, we are headed off to Spain, where we will fly into Barcelona, then make our way to Madrid! I'm so excited to go to these places! Obviously I'll take lots of pictures, and post the for all of you to see!

I really wish I had more to say, but really nothing worth writing about has been going on. Just living the life in Ireland, I guess, and trying to make the best of my last few weeks!

Sorry this is such a short little guy. But, I figured you would all want to know that I am still alive!

Miss you and I will see you soon! AHH!

don't worry. I didn't forget about this!

Bet you all thought that I forgot about his huh? Well don't you worry. I am here.
Lots of things have happened since I last wrote. Well, not really, but enough to write about for sure!

The weekend after my parents left, Isabelle, Brenna, Abby, and I headed off to Doolin, a small town right near the Cliffs of Moher. There are 3 pubs in the entire town, and only like 500 people. So, you can imagine that there is not much to do. But, it was beautiful, and the town was adorable. We stayed at the cutest hostel (another Rainbow hostel...always a winner with us) which was run by a husband and wife. They were so adorable, and Matty, the husband, even set up a nice little slide show of pictures that he had taken over the years, explaining the history of Doolin to us. He was so adorable.

We woke up on Saturday morning and went to the Cliffs. They were beautiful the second time around, and we had a lovely day. We were driven there by Carmel, the wife, and then we walked back to the hostel, stopping at every farm animal we could find. We stopped at an adorable little jam shop called Clare Jams, and each bought ourselves a little jar for the night. It was delicious! I bought Strawberry Champagne (mom's favorite). It was delicious, and I still have some in my fridge!

But Doolin was a pretty sleepy little town, but definitely worth all the scenery. It was beautiful, but all of Ireland is, so you can't really go wrong.

I have been working on lots and lots of papers during the week, so that's pretty boring to report on. But, I did get one of my first and only grades back on a midterm paper and it was an A. So happy about that!

Last Saturday we had a trip sponsored by Arcadia to go to the Aran Islands. It was probably one of the most beautiful places I've been since I've gotten here (a very close second to Dingle). We biked all around the island, once again stopping at every farm animal we saw. It was absolutely gorgeous! But, the best part about it was this part where you got to climb up to the top of a cliff, and there was nothing between you and the edge! You could go right up and sit on the edge of a very, very, very tall cliff and dangle your feet right over. And that is what I did. You can imagine when I told my mom this, she was not very happy with me! But, it was a once in a lifetime deal, and I had to do it! It was incredible! Just look at the pictures! CRAZY!

But, let's get to the good stuff. So, Wednesday was St. Patrick's Day, and I was in Ireland for it. Are you kidding me? Crazy! And it certainly was a fun day at that!

We woke up early and made a delicious breakfast with some friends, including some yummy pancakes, biscuits, bacon (which I burned myself with) and other yummy goodies. It was such a lovely way to start the day! Then we headed down to Shop Street where the parade was going on. Now, you would think that since it is Ireland, they would have the best parade going. Yeah. I thought that too. But this one was a little different, and absolutely not what I expected! Let's just say that there was about 15 minutes between each float and only about 2 of them were Irish themed. There were some belly dancers, star wars characters, and other crazy things that did not make sense at all. Definitely an experience that I will certainly not forget. Then, dressed in green, we headed over to a pub to meet a bunch of people. It was so nice, and we sat outside on the patio because it was just so darn warm! We definitely had the luck of the Irish when it came to weather that day! Then, when we were done there, we headed down to the canal to sit outside and enjoy the sun! It was beautiful! A lovely St. Patrick's Day had by all. I still can't believe I was in Ireland for it! Crazy!

But that's about it for now. I'm knee deep in paper assignments, so I think I should start working on some of those. I am getting a good jump on it though, so that's good!

I promise I'll get better at writing in this!

I miss you all and love you all! Can you believe it's almost April?

got my family fix, and now i'm settled!

Sorry it's been so long, but I have just been so busy because the entire family was here last week! And, let me tell you...it was just what I needed. Now, I am happy as a clam, and ready to finish up my last 2 months here...can you believe it?

I'll try to remember everything we did, but we stopped in so many little towns that I may forget a few. But, I'll try my best.

Mom and Dad arrived on Monday morning. I went to my 10am class, and was planning on meeting them at the hotel right after. So, as I was running to the hotel to get them, I was crossing the bridge into town and I hear someone scream. Initially I was annoyed, thinking to myself, "god I hate when people scream on the street. They are so annoying." Then, I hear it again and make out what the person is saying..."Rocket!" So, I knew that it was my dad! I turned around, and there he was, running towards me on the bridge. It literally was out of a movie. They had arrived so early so they went to look in the Cathedral, but they went in one at a time so they wouldn't miss me if I walked by. Good thing they did that because there I was! Such a perfect way to start the week! Then, we went to a pub downtown and I showed them my favorite meal of all time...vegetable soup, brown bread, and guinness. It was so perfect! Later, we went out to get some fish and chips at what is supposed to be the best fish and chips place around. I had never been there, and was so ready to try it. But, we were a little underwhelmed. It was way too greasy and really not outstanding. But, the atmosphere was great. I could have eaten anywhere. I was just happy to have my family with me! We had a lovely night on the town after dinner, listening to some great live music, then ran off to the hotel for some much needed rest...poor guys were so jet lagged!

The next day, in come Jenna and Brian, driving on the left side of the road, into the hotel! The family was all together! So happy! The girls did some shopping, while the boys found a pub for a much needed pint. It was perfect. That night, my family treated me and my roommates to a much needed home cooked meal. We made mini meatloafs and it was the first time my Irish roommates had ever had it! How cute! They loved them! It was so nice to have a nice family dinner, and let my parents see who I am living with..and Abby too, of course! After our bellies were full, we headed to a pub that does Irish set dancing on Tuesdays. All of my friends were there, so my family was able to meet them as well! It was just so perfect!

The next day, we began our journey into the motherland. We started off through Connemara, looking at all the beautiful sights along the way. We stopped literally at every beautiful thing we saw to take a picture of it. Eventually, after stopping in a small town for lunch, we made it to Westport...honestly the cutest town in all of Ireland. We had a delicious Italian dinner, then headed to the famous pub Matt Malloy's, owned by the guy in the Chieftans. This was literally the most perfect Irish pub I have ever seen. It was full of old men and women just having the time of their lives and being so happy. When they found out that my birthday was the next day, and I would be turning 21 at midnight, they were so excited! They sang to me, danced with me, circled around me, and just made it the best night ever! Everyone was so happy to celebrate my birthday and I could not have asked to ring in my day any other way!

The next day we headed off to our next destination...Sligo. The girls, again went shopping, while the men went off to have a pint. Then, my lovely family threw me a little birthday party in the hotel room! It was so nice. I'm so happy that they were there for my birthday! Then, we headed off to a new pub, where the music was great and the guinness was better! The next morning, we woke up early to go find W.B. Yeats' grave...one of the prides of Ireland. It was a little underwhelming, but still so cool for this little English major. Very very nice. Then we headed off to our next destination, Ballyvaughn, but not without some car trouble along the way. Basically, the entire bottom of the car fell off. Not good. But, Dad and Brian saved the day, and after a few hours delay, we were back on the left side of the road in our new car...which happened to be a standard. scary.

But, we made it to Ballyvaughn, and I swear, we were the only people in the entire town. It is so small, with only one hotel open at the time. So, we cozied ourselves up in there and had a DELICIOUS meal there, right in front of the fireplace. We took it easy that night, and we were all in bed early, sleeping like little babies!

Then, it was Saturday and headed off the the Cliffs of Moher. For those of you that don't know...the Cliffs of Insanity from the classic movie "The Princess Bride" was filmed here. Obviously I was in heaven. They were gorgeous, and we were so lucky to have such a nice day! Mom did well, even with her extreme fear of heights. I was proud!

Then we headed back into Galway, just in time for the market. My family got to experience the heaven that is the doughnut, and they agreed that they were the best things ever created by human hands. We also got my favorite crepe, sharing it among the five of us! Heaven. Then, I was given my big ol' birthday present...the most beautiful ring ever created. I am honestly so in love. You all have to see it. You will die, I'm telling you. It's a GORGEOUS cameo ring, and is just the most perfect thing on my finger. I am obsessed. Then, that night we went out to a fabulous traditional Irish dinner, then headed off to another pub. Dad, of course got up to sing with the band (big surprise) and everyone LOVED him, of course! What better place to sing Elvis than in an Irish pub!

The next morning, Jenna and Brian headed off to Dublin, so we said our goodbyes. Mom, Dad, and I had one last day in Galway, seeing all the things we didn't get to see. It was lovely. Then, we had a nice little Italian dinner, and headed back to the hotel, where we didn't move because we were so exhausted! I can't blame us! We had such a busy week!

Then, the next morning, they headed off to the bus station, and our perfect vacation had ended. But, it was everything I could have asked for and more! Everyone was so happy, and it was so nice to have the family back together again!

Also, just so I don't have to do a whole new post about this...my beautiful roommate Abby threw me and my other friend a surprise birthday party last night! So sweet of her! It was so much fun! Such a perfect time!

But, that's enough for now. This was a long one. Love you guys! I miss you!

girl fun!

I figured I should fill everyone in on my first weekend back in Galway after a few weeks! It was so nice to be back, and let me tell you, the weekend was definitely successful, and full of such girl fun!

Abby and I started our weekend off with a nice little date to go shopping. She is the best person ever to go shopping with because she always tells me I look pretty, and always tells me what things look good and what I should buy. So, she talked me in to this adorable gray leather jacket, some brown tights, and some adorable gold flats, all of which go perfect with my new dress from London! Then, we went into an adorable cafe. I got the soup of the day, which oddly enough is always vegetable, no matter what pub you go to, and Abby got a scone. We had girl talk for so long, then had even more girl talk with the man who was working at the cafe. He found out I was from MA and immediately asked me how I felt about the recent senate election. He was such an angel and so interested in our opinions. I definitely will be going back there again. Then we headed back home to watch some Laguna Beach and make dinner, all while laying on the couch for hours. We finally decided to start moving, and we went to see our favorite bands at one of our favorite clubs. They were fantastic, as always, and so dreamy. We stood behind them the whole time, in complete awe. I think they may have caught on.

The next morning, Zach and I went downtown to my favorite place in Galway, the market! It was such a nice day out, and we just walked around, looking at all the things they were selling, and debating what on earth we should get for food. We finally decided on crepes, and if that wasn't the best decision of my life, I don't know what it. My crepe was filled with ham, 3 cheeses (one of which was feta), sun dried tomatoes, and pesto. Honestly, putting this delicious pice of art to words would not even do it justice. Everyone needs to get one. Fly to Galway just to get one. Then, get the doughnuts after...which is exactly what Zach and I did. We got a bag of 6, so each of us had 3. They were as perfect as they always are, and I haven't stopped dreaming about them since. Thank god I will be here next weekend to get them again...probably getting the 6 all to myself. After our bellies were full, Zach and I roamed into Topshop, the most expensive store around with the most beautiful clothing. It must have been my lucky day because I found 2 sweaters, on sale. Then, they have a student discount, which I obviously used, so I ended up spending 20 euro on 2 sweaters. Normally you can buy like one sock for that price there. But, the fashion gods were on my side, and they wanted me to look good! Then we headed off to a pub to go watch the Ireland/France rugby game! This was so much fun! Everyone was having the best time, and the game was so intense. I started to understand what was going on towards the end, and it is actually such a fun sport to watch. I felt so Irish! We ended up losing pretty badly, but it was so much fun anyway!

That night, we had a few people over. We spent the night hanging out in our living room, singing Taylor Swift songs and having the best time. But, my outfit looked amazing, so how could it have been a bad night?

The next morning was probably the most amount of girl fun I have ever had. Abby and I didn't wake up until about noon. We then ran downstairs, plopped ourselves on the couch, and didn't move for about 7 hours. We watched so many shows, but mostly almost an entire season of America's Best Dance Crew. I can officially say that I am addicted. But, it was such a lovely day, even though we barely did anything. But, such girl fun, and it was perfect!

But, overall it was a very successful weekend! So happy! And, in officially 1 week, my family will be here! I can't wait!

love you all!

with my by myself

Thought I would do a quick little update about the lovely day I had yesterday!

So, my day didn't get started until about 1, when I walked all the way to school to go to my one class to then find out it was canceled. Cool. So, what was I to do with my time? It was such a nice day out, and I did not want to just sit at home all day. I was walking around, trying to kill time, and I ran into my friend Zach. We decided to go get sandwiches at this amazing place across the street from school. My sandwich, of course was the best, and we just sat and chit chatted. It was nice. But, Zach had class, so I needed to figure out what I was going to do. All my other friends were in class, so I just decided to walk downtown and go exploring, enjoying the beautiful day! I had to buy a children's book for one of my classes, so I went on a hunt to go find some cute little bookstores. I went into a very small secondhand bookstore and asked if the woman if she carried the Velveteen Rabbit. But, she had never heard of it. I was shocked, but I figured maybe it was just an American thing. But, I had my heart set on finding this book, so I kept looking. I stayed the next bookstore for the longest time, just roaming around and looking at all the people and books. But, they didn't have what I wanted. But, it was still the cutest store, and I stayed there for a while, looking around. Then, my next stop was this book store that is pretty much like Borders...not too charming, but I figured I would give it a try. And of course, there it was. My favorite book of all time, just sitting there, waiting for me to pick it up! Heaven. So, I bought it.

But, now that my mission was over, I needed something else to do. So, I picked up some postcards, and headed into a pub to write out my notes. I got myself a cup of coffee, and sat down and did some writing. It was actually so nice. The more I am here, the more I realize how much I love writing. It is so calming to me. Writing in my journal is one of my favorite things, and I think I'm going to keep that habit up after I leave here.

Overall, it was a very nice day. This weekend, we are staying in Galway, and I am very happy about that. I need a little travel break. Then, only one more weekend until my family comes! I can't wait! 9 more days!

Love ya'll!

livin and learning in london

Just made it back from my first big trip outside of Ireland! Can you guys believe it? I actually got on a plane, flew somewhere else, and made it back alive.

So we jetted off to London on Thursday, starting our journey nice and early at the Garda station, registering to live here for more than a month. Now, I'm not going to get deported, so that's a good thing! So, we were up at 6, getting out london on. We got the bus to the airport, and ran into some friends who were also traveling to London. So, we sat with them on the bus, and took the hour ride to Shannon. When we got there, we met up with a bunch more Arcadia people who were doing the same thing as us, on the same flight. After waiting around for a little while, we made it passed the scary Ryan Air people, who actually turned out to be incredibly nice and didn't charge us anything extra for stupid things like we were warned. It seemed almost too good to be true, but it worked out. Being the nervous flier that I am, I plopped myself right between Zach and Abby, grabbing their hands as we took off. Zach was the lucky one sitting to my right, so his hand got a little bit red and squished. Oops. Abby kept me busy by singing little songs to me, and squeezing my clammy hand with her equally clammy and tiny baby hand. Clearly, I will be sitting next to her on every flight.

So, we finally landed, and we started to look for a way to get into London, because we were still an hour away from the city. The rest of the group we traveled with were more prepared than we were, so they ran to their train, which took them right there. Abby and I decided it would be a good idea to take the bus because it was cheaper. Bad idea. It started off fine, but just to sum it up, I ended up sitting next to a very scary man, who was very forward and wanted to help me with everything, including getting me to where I was staying that night. I, of course, was not going to let this happen, but he was pretty insistent. But, Abby and I were smart girls, told him a lie, and he ran away. But, it was not the best way to start off our time in London.

So, our first night just kept getting better...not. We were planning on staying with Abby's friend, but of course his phone wouldn't work and we could not get in touch with him. So, here we are, sitting in the bus station with no where to go. So who do we call? Just our dad, Zach. And of course he comes through and saves the day, asking the rest of the group we traveled with if we could crash at their place (they were staying at one of the girl's cousin's house) So, Abby and I took a cab there, so happy to be away from the bus station and scary london men. When we got to the apartment, it was honestly so beautiful...like I'm talking sex and the city good. Beautiful furniture, art gallery style photos on the wall, and just such a nice atmosphere. They were so sweet to take us in, and obviously we were so thankful. They wined and dined us, and took us out to an adorable little pub near their house. It was so nice to finally have a roof to sleep under, and great hospitality. They seriously saved our lives.

The next morning, we woke up early to go to Buckingham Palace to see the changing of the guards. Definitely so cool, and I am totally convinced I saw the queen. She just didn't see me, or she would have invited me in for a drink. We found a great spot to watch it, and the men all dressed up even decided to play Thriller as one of their musical selections. They obviously knew Abby and I were going to be there, only the 2 biggest MJ fans ever (besides Maura) who totally believe that he is the second coming. But anyway...after that, I set off to do some touristy things. We started off at Big Ben, which was so pretty! Then, we did a little tour of Westminster Abbey, which was also incredible. Obviously, I died in the Poet's Corner, where my man Chaucer is buried, and there are tons of other plaques and things devoted to every other freat writer. So great! Then, I headed off to the Tower of London! I totally felt like I was in the Parent Trap, running around like Annie and her mom. It was perfect!

Finally, we met up with Abby's friend, who lived in the Marble Arch district. We made it to his apartment, which was actually so nice. There are 5 boys that live there, 3 bathrooms, a beautiful living room with leather furniture, a flat screen tv, wireless, and a washer and dryer. And, turns out, 3 of the roommates were in Berlin for the weekend, so we even had our own bed! So much better than a hostel! When we got there, we were so hungry, so the 3 of walked down the street to get Shwarma...some sort of pita filled with lamb or chicken and other delicious things. They were perfect. Then, we went out to a pub for a little while, and then went to bed...we were EXHAUSTED!

Then, we were up early the next day to do some more traveling. We met up with our friend Isabelle to go to Camden. This was such a cool little place in London, with all the crazy alternative people, living the non-mainstream lifestyle, if you get what I mean. So obviously, I fell in love with them. Abby and I went shopping at a little market, and I bought 2 dresses, with the money I don't have. But, they were totally worth it! Then, Abby and Isabelle and I went to Portabello Road, a lovely little market with so much yummy food and things to buy! It was the sweetest little place! I bought a doughnut, which was sooooo delicious, and totally worth the 1 pound! Then, we headed off to Picadilly Circus to meet up with some more of the girls to do some shopping. We went into Top Shop, which is actually the most perfect, beautiful, amazing clothing store. A little bit of a cross between Anthopologie and Nordstrom...so basically, it's incredibly expensive. But, obviously I fell in love with everything in there, and almost bought a bag that was way out of my price range. I guess the london atmosphere got the best of me. But I didn't end up getting it. If it hadn't been for scary Ryan Air and their one bag rule, I TOTALLY would have bought it. But, I didn't. I'll probably buy it online because I am still dreaming about it. We stayed in that night, and had a little party with the boys and a few of their friends. It was so nice, and tons of fun!

It was up again, but a little later this time. We slept in this day, and kind of lounged around for a little bit. It was nice. Then we got some lunch, and headed off to Abbey Road for a little Beatles photo shoot. As you can imagine, I was in HEAVEN! However, it is not a tourist attraction like you would think. Actually, it is just a street, where real people live, and real people drive. Obviously, we were not aware of this, and were shocked when we saw cars driving on the road. But, nothing was going to stop me from getting my picture on Abbey Road...not even traffic. So what did we do? We stop traffic, and cross the street about 200 times, just to get the perfect picture. It was so funny! But, we got it, and of course, I was the happiest ever!

That night, it was the Superbowl! We stayed in the apartment again with the boys, watching the game. Sam, our host, was nice enough to make us chili, which was AMAZING! The perfect way to watch the Superbowl...in London and with chili! It was delicious!

Finally it was our last day in London. So we woke up and headed over the the Tate Modern...the famous modern art museum! It was perfect! Right up my alley! We stayed there for a few hours and then started making our way back to the apartment to get our stuff and head back home to Galway.

All in all, it was a great trip! We learned a lot, and had a great old time! We all decided that we definitely have to go back, because there was so much more that we didn't see! It's a huge city. It's definitely nice to visit, but I am so glad I did not study abroad there. Yes it is beautiful, but I know that I would be fat and broke if I lived there...2 things I do not want to be when I leave Ireland.

Hope things are good back in the states! I miss it!

Countdown till my family gets here: 11 days!

love you!

ooooo heaven is a place on earth

It's a cloudy day in Galway today, and I am hanging out between classes, curled up in my bed in sweatpants and a huge sweatshirt. The heat is still an issue in Ireland...like, they don't really use it here. I totally take it for granted at home, just having it on all the time. It's better than it used to be when there was snow on the ground, but I am still cold a lot. I take after my mom!

This weekend, I took my first real trip within Ireland to Dingle Peninsula...and let me tell you, it is honestly the most beautiful place on earth. Everyone needs to go there at least once in their life. It was incredible.

Our journey began on Friday with a 6 hour bus ride to Dingle, with a dew stops here and there. We were picked up from the bus station by Scott, the man in charge of the hostel we were staying at. What an angel he was! Sweetest man ever! He was from Australia and had always known that he was going to live in Ireland. So, he settled in Dingle, and loves it. When he brought us to the hostel, which was the most adorable redone old house, he told us that he would drive us into town to go to some pubs! So nice of him! He dropped us off at his favorite pub, and we were on our own for the nightlife in Dingle (or lack there of, that night). There were probably 10 people in the pub...5 of them were us. There was some live music, which was very traditional and beautiful. After having a drink with the bartender, Tommy (who became our new best friend and was so sweet) we decided that we needed to find a pub with a little bit more going on. So we walked down the street and followed the sound of the music. Great choice, because the band was great! They played all fun cover songs that we knew! We sat right in the front and were singing along to every single one. They loved us! Then, we decided we needed to get up and dance, of course, and we spent the rest of the night dancing away with just us girls in the very tiny pub. But, it was so much fun! Such a great way to start off our Dingle weekend!

The next morning we woke up early to go rent bikes to go riding around the peninsula. We were told to rent them from a place on the main street, which was also a hardware store, which was also a pub. Only in Ireland! But, for only 10 euro we got hte bike for the whole day, and we started off on our 25 mile adventure! Yes, for all of you that know I am not the biggest fan of working out and make fun of me for it (and you know who you are), I rode 25 MILES! 25 MILES! YES I DID! And it was amazing! We rode along Slea Head Drive, which takes you all along the coast, and through tiny little villages. It was one of the best things I have ever done. Every where you turned there was something to take a picture of. We were stopping all the time (maybe because we were getting a little tired too) to take pictures. Everything was beautiful. It is exactly what people imagine Ireland to be like. So green, sheep everywhere, and incredible cliffs and landscapes. Honestly, I can't even put it to words. That's why I will put some pictures up for ya'll at the end! Oh, and I know that some of you will find this funny, but for some reason, I was in the back of the group the entire time. I don't know why, but I always managed to be bringing up the rear. It made me laugh, and I thought of everyone who would think it was so funny to see me riding 25 miles, behind everyone else! haha!

After our 6 hour ride, we were exhausted! Right at the end of the loop, we literally had to ride up (or walk our bikes up) the biggest hill known to human kind. I don't know how anyone in the world could ride up that. It was actually so funny. But then, it was followed by a very long downhill stretch, which was also a little terrifying, but still so fun. And next time I do this, I will know to get pants with padding in the butt, because mine felt like it was going to fall off afterwards! But we were so proud of ourselves for doing it, and it was absolutely worth it. I can't even describe how beautiful it was. So, to celebrate our accomplishments, we rewarded ourselves with hot chocolate and a piece of chocolate cake, and then a nice long nap back at our hostel.

When we woke up, we made a nice little dinner in the kitchen and ate with 2 of the other guests in the hostel. They were so sweet. Then, Scott took us all out, including our 2 new friends, to the same pub that was dead the night before. But, this time, there were so many more people! We grabbed our own table, right in front of the music, and we plopped ourselves down, and started having a great night with our new friends. When I went up to grab a drink later, I saw a group of women celebrating a hen party (aka: bachelorette party). I went up to them to congratulate the bride, and they immediately pulled me down and stated chatting with me! They were so sweet! I ended up spending the entire time with them, laughing and having so much fun! They brought me into their group pictures, and even gave me a sash to wear that matched all theirs, which said "Girls on Tour" complete with red flashing lights, and some glasses with feathers, which said "Foxy Lady." I exchanged emails with one of them. We are probably going to be best friends from now on. Such angels!

Then we finally made it back to the hostel, and let me tell you...we were EXHAUSTED! But, we got up early and decided to go for a walk to do a little more exploring before we had to leave. Scott drove us to where the bay meets the ocean so we could go for a walk. We walked all around cliffs and fields, and it was amazing. There were hardly any people there, and it was like we were the only 4 people in the entire world. It was the most incredible thing. We were standing literally on top of cliffs, just looking out into the ocean. It was amazing! Everyone needs to go there. I'm serious.

Dingle was absolutely perfect! Such a great weekend! I'm so happy that we went there. And, I think I might get to go back with my family! Maybe we will try horseback riding. That might be a little bit nicer on my butt...maybe not!

Oh, also to add in one more thing before I forget...I volunteered at my first homework club this week! I am doing it through a class here, and part of the requirement is that we go and work with children after school once a week! Yesterday was my first time, and it was so much fun! It just made me so happy to be able to do something that I love here. It made me very comfortable to be in a place where I was surrounded by people who were interested in the same career as me. And, the children were just so adorable and just made me smile. I worked with 2 little boys who were so cute! I helped them with math and spelling. I am so excited to go back! I really really love it there!

Until the next blog entry! I love you and I miss ya'll!

this one is for mona

Because I woke up to a message from Maura telling me to update my blog, I figured I should make the little princess happy. So, here it goes!

Right now, it's about 5pm, and I'm curled up in my bed, in my sweatpants, with Bear by my side. I just turned the heat on, and I'm settling in. Soon, I'll have to get up and make dinner with the very limited amount of food I have left. But, we are going away for the weekend to the Dingle Peninsula, so I decided it was best to not but anything quite yet. So, looks like I'm going to have a ham and cheese toastie...again. I had one for lunch. But, at least they are easy. I may have to make 2. They are not too filling, and I'm really hungry.

I only had one class today (I know, my life is so hard). But, it was a good one. It was Irish Women in Society. I really like it. The professor (or lecturer, as they call them here) is so funny. She's like the kind of person who is a funny mean, and doesn't really care what anyone thinks of her. I was a little scared by her at first when I met her outside the classroom before I even knew she was my professor. But, on the first day of class, she was not was I expected, and was actually so funny and just doesn't really care about anything. She told us she didn't even care if we came to class because she said she wouldn't want to sit and listen to herself talk for 2 hours, so why should we. Yeah, I like her. HAHA!

After class, I had to hand in a sheet of paper telling the people from Arcadia what classes I am taking. The beautiful woman, Grainne, who ran our orientation was there, and she was so sweet. She asked me how I was doing, remembered who I was, and asked how I was settling in. It is really nice to know that there are people here who remember who I am, especially when the college is so big. It made me feel so happy. We chatted for a little while, then my friend Brenna and I decided to go downtown to shop for some boots for me! But, I didn't find any, of course. They don't really make shoes over here for people with big feet like me. A little bit discouraging. I am definitely not like the Irish girls over here. You think I would be because well, I'm Irish, but it is like a completely different world being a girl here, mainly when it comes to what you wear. The girls here dress up SO MUCH! Like, I'm talking spending hours getting ready to put on a very very short dress that barely covers what needs to be covered, and heels that make them about 7 inches taller than they really are. It's crazy. If I ever dressed like that to go out back in Vermont, I think people would think I was going to a themed party. I look so frumpy next to them, in my jeans and boots, which I think is the cutest outfit ever. But, I look like I am wearing pajamas compared to them. And, since I don't really wear make-up anyway, I look like I am about to go to bed! haha! Maybe one night I'll just buy something really gross and cheap to wear out. Probably not. I think I would die in those heels. I honestly don't know how they do it!

But anyway, I had an amazing cupcake today on my walk back from shopping. So delicious and class (they don't say classy over here, just class...I'm definitely adding that one to my vocabulary). It was some sort of light lemony cake with yes, get this...cream cheese and butter frosting. OH MY GOD. I believe the woman told me that it was lovely, or beautiful, or gorgeous...some sort of amazing silver dollar word like that...to describe it to me. But, let's be honest, she had me at cream cheese. It was amazing. It tasted like a class (heh, like that?) version of my favorite Alden Merrill lemon cupcake. SO GOOD!So now I'm home, resting up from such a busy day filled with one class, which started at 1, which I think I forgot to say! My life is so hard here!

Last night, we went to a few pubs to hear some music. We started at Hole in the Wall, a place we heard was supposed to be great, with really cheap drinks and a good atmosphere. We walked in to what looked like a pretty traditional pub, with all the decorations you would expect. But, as we walked around to find a seat, we found ourselves walking through a dancefloor, with neon lights, and Beyonce playing. Definitely did not fit the vibe we were looking for. But, we stayed for one drink (which was normally priced, not cheap like everyone said) and headed out to one of our favorite traditional places, Taffe's. The band was someone we had heard before, but they were great! We started chatting it up with some of the locals, and met 2 very nice guys, who at the end of the night when we left said that it was "good craic!" (that means good fun for those of you who may be confused) So fun to hear that used on us! We are so Irish now!

Now it's very rainy and dreary out, and I am very comfortable in my bed. I think tonight is a good night to finish my student teaching application for St. Mike's, that is due in a week. I just want to be all done with it so I don't have to worry at all anymore. It will feel good to have it out of the way! I'll force myself to finish!

Hope everything is good at home! Love and miss you all!

the perfect Irish weekend!

I need to get a lot better with updating my blog. But, this one is going to be filled with fun things...so much happened this weekend! So on Friday, it was so beautiful out! It was sunny, and warm, and the perfect day to go exploring. So, after our classes we went down to the Claddagh region of Galway, right by the water. It was amazing! Definitely the most beautiful scenery I have seen since I have been here! I was in heaven! I couldn't stop taking pictures! Everywhere I looked, there was something else to take a picture of! It was perfect, and just what I wanted. Then, we were getting so hungry, so we decided to try a resturaunt right by the Spanish arch. We didn't look at hte prices beforehand (it turned out to be a little expensive) but the building was so adorable. It was like an old house, with old books everywhere and worn in candles that had wax dripping from every direction. I got beetroot and smoked paprika risotto with goat cheese. Very unlike me to pick this out, but it was SO GOOD! Then, of course we had to get dessert, so Abby and I split a raspberry tart, which was the best thing ever! Definitely worth the little extra expenses. It was the perfect end to the perfect day of exploring! After dinner, we went to Taft's...a favorite pub here, and listened to a live band the entire night. They were awesome, and so good! Nothing traditional, but they played some classic rock songs...not the cheesy ones. We knew most of them, and could sing along like silly Americans!

Then, it was up early to go to the market near St. Nicholas' Church downtown! This was so perfect, and the most fun little place! People were set up with fresh veggies, cheese, dips, and all sorts of yummy homemade things. It was the cutest thing. Then, at the end of the market was the doughnut man...who made fresh doughnuts right there on the spot. OH. MY. GOD. Honestly, it was the best thing I have eaten since I have been in Ireland, maybe even in my lifetime. I am already planning my trips so that I can be back on Saturday mornings to get a doughnut from him. Everyone needs to fly to Galway to get one. Wow! And, I even had this after we went out to breakfast where I got a waffle that was doused in sugar syrup and melted butter. Needless to say, I needed something a little less sweet in my mouth after that, so my friend and I bought some cheese, fresh bread, and sun dried tomatoes for lunch! It was delicious! Later that night, we decided to go to the pubs again, this time for some traditional Irish music...and boy did we find some! Abby of course made friends with one of the men in the band, and they even dedicated a song to us! It was so cute! But, we got to talking to some other old men, one from Australia and one from Ireland. They were old friends, and friends with Abby's new friend, so we were all having a blast together! I told the musician how my dad was in a band, and he told me to bring him back when they visit and they will get him up on stage to sing! How perfect? They were the cutest! Such a perfect traditional Irish night, hanging out with the old men!

Then, it was up early again for a bus trip to Connemarra with some friends! The bus drove us all teh way through the countryside, which was incredible! There were sheep everywhere, and stone walls. It was right out of a movie! So so beautiful! When the adorable tourguide wasn't talking, he played Irish music in the background. It was the cutest thing! We took stops to get out and take pictures when he saw something he wanted to show us. Then, we eventually made it to our destination...a BEAUTIFUL abbey that is a boarding school for girls. It is AMAZING! I would love to go to school there! So beautiful! The trip was well worth it. We were back by 5, just in time to make dinner and curl up into bed after a long day!

But, it has been such a wonderful Irish weekend. I am so happy that I got to explore where I am living for the next few months! It is beautiful here!

I'll get better about updating this! Hope everyone is happy at home! I miss you all! Love you!

nutella

Hey ya'll!

So, I'm sitting at my desk eating stale crackers and nutella because we have no food in the house. Abby and I are about to go grocery shopping, and we are going to try to be big girls and buy real food, instead of just bread and cheese...we thought we could live off of toasties (grilled cheese) but that's pretty impossible. So, hopefully we will buy some protein and I can start eating like a real human.

Last night, our housemates made us dinner. They made us lasagna, and it was so good! It wasn't like lasagna at home...it was with a creamy sauce, not a tomato sauce. It was so good. I was dreaming about it today. They made us chips (french fries) and garlic bread too. It was so sweet of them. We were at the table for over two hours, just talking and laughing and having girl fun. I really like them. Abby and I really lucked out in living here.

Today was a very busy day for me, running around campus doing all sorts of things. We went into campus to go register for our English seminars, which apparently is a huge deal here. There were only about 3 spots per international student for a class of 17...not too fair, but whatever. So we get there to find out that we need to take a number, and then come back and line up by our numbers. It was so disorganized and very old fashioned. But, long story short, I got into the first seminar that I wanted...Poetry before 1800. I hope it's worth all the trouble and waiting! Then I had my teaching literacy class. I am absolutely in love with the professor. I missed the first week of the class because I just found out about it a few days ago. But, he let me in, and it was the best class I have had so far! He was the nicest man. Granted, it is filled with incredibly annoying education majors who suck up to the professor and think they are funny when they are not, but I'm used that that by now. I am absolutely staying in the class for him. I think I have already developed my first academic crush! Soon, we will get to work with children at a homework club! I am actually so excited for that! Then, I had to run to my postmodernism class, where we are looking at modern art and the meaning behind them. This is also the perfect class for me. Even though it is a huge lecture and I never have to really go because he wouldn't notice anyway, I really don't think I am ever going to miss that class. It is too good. Oh yeah, and in between waiting to get in line to register, I sat on a bench outside and read "Lolita" for my class. I love doing that here, and it was such a beautiful day out! It feels like spring right now!

After a busy day of classes, Abby and I went to "Soc Day" where all the clubs on campus try to get you to join! I joined a bunch...like the photo soc, traditional soc, food and drink soc, irish studies soc, best buddies, and a bunch more. They are going to send out emails, so hopefully I will meet some new people that way, and try out some new things.

It's only 4 and it has already been such a busy day! But, it gave me lots to write about in here! Hopefully I'll have some fun stories to tell you about from our adventures tonight!

Love you all! Miss you!

Homestay in Ballyagran!

I made it back safely from my homestay in Ballyagran...a really, really small village outside of Limerick. Another girl from my program and I stayed with a family who lived on a farm. They had 4 kids...3 boys and a girl, ages 9-15. The kids were adorable, and the little girl, Aoife (pronounced like Eefa) was so attached to us. She was adorable. The youngest son, Paul, was also adorable, while the other 2 boys, Colin and Eoin (pronounced Owen) were very nice as well. I'm really glad that we got to stay with them. We were lucky that we ended up with such a nice family. Even though it was a little awkward at times, it was really interesting to be placed in a family...and that is exactly what it was. It was like they just threw us into this family, and we were members of it for a weekend. They had nothing planned for us...no special trips or events or anything. We literally just hung out with them for the weekend, doing exactly what they would have done if we weren't there. It was a little weird at first, because I would find myself standing around the kitchen really awkwardly, but it was definitely a very authentic experience. My favorite part of the entire weekend was taking a walk with Paul and Aoife down the street to hte village, which only consisted of their church and school, which is probably the size of two houses. But, the scenery was incredible. It was actually out of a postcard that you would get from Ireland. It was so nice! And the kids were so happy to show us around, telling us all about what it is like in their town and making fun of us for how we say words and what we call certain things. At one point in the walk we walked by a herd of cows, and of course I was taking pictures like crazy. Aofie then asks..."Do they not have cows in America?" I told her we did, but these were special because they were Irish cows! After that beautiful walk came my least favorite part of the homestay. When I was in bed that night, I was woken up by their incredibly annoying dog barking and howling literally what sounded like inside my ear. I guess the family was used to it because nobody did anything about it. I was about ready to go downstairs and let the thing in or do something with it so it would just shut up and let me sleep. But, eventually, it went away...but not before waking me up one more time. That was my least favorite part. But, I'm sure it could have been a lot worse, so I am very happy with where we were placed. And, it was really nice to get into the countryside and see what a real family was like. We even went to mass with them (aren't you proud of me, mom?). But, I am glad that we only did it for the weekend, because it was definitely a little awkward being thrown into a family. So, now I am back in my bed, picking out the final classes to register for. It is actually really stressful. This school is so big that the professors don't really care if you really need to get into a class. I like my small school where I know the professors by name and they can sneak me into a class even if it is already full. But, hopefully it will all work out. I will keep you posted. It is now time for me to go to bed since I got no sleep with that dog last night! Hopefully he didn't follow me to Galway and will keep me up tonight! Love you all!

First post! Let's see if I can keep up!

So, since everyone is making a blog, I feel like I should too! And, now you can all read about my crazy adventures here in Galway, and I don't have to tell them in separate emails!
I have officially been in Galway for a week now. Can you believe it? And I have been out of the country for almost 2! I know! After all the nerves and tears, I'm sure some of you are surprised that I even made it here! But, I did, and so far it's been very very fun! Galway is beautiful! It is freezing here, which I thought I left behind in Vermont, but it is still so pretty. I think the cold is more tolerable here because I am in Ireland, so it makes it ok! Since we are right by the water, there was some crazy frost and ice on the trees that looked absolutely beautiful! All white and icy! It was like being in Candy Land...what is that place? The ice forest or something? You know what I mean.
Our house is awesome! Much better than the hostel that Abby and I got lost finding on our first day, walking probably a mile away from it with 400 pounds of luggage, only to realize we passed it and it was right in front of our face. Sharing a room smaller than a dorm with 5 girls I had just met was rather interesting, but it worked out. But, living in a house is so much nicer. Abby and I have our own room, with our own bathroom (thank god). We live with 3 other Irish girls...Lisa, AnnMarie, and Kate. They are all so sweet and so much fun! We have different schedules and stuff, so we don't see them all that much, but I'm sure that once we get to know them, we will be hanging out a lot more! Actually, right now our smoke alarm is going off. Probably burned some toast with nutella or something (which Abby and I are planning on living off of).
I started classes on Monday. Lots and lots of English, with lots of books to read. But, education is so different over here. They actually never go to classes, which is so funny. They are all lectures, and no teacher knows your name at all. And, all we have to do is write an essay at the end...the most perfect set up for me! But, all the classes seem so interesting, so maybe I will end up being that loser American who never misses a class. We'll see. I'll let you all know!
I have made some great friends over here too! Everyone is so nice. And, my favorite part about this whole place are the people in Galway. We will go into a pub for lunch, and people will just come up to us, unannounced, and ask where we are from (maybe we look like we are from far away). But, they are genuinely interested in where we come from and what we are studying. We have met so many nice people! The pubs are definitely the place to be...even if it's just for coffee in the afternoon (not everyone is drunk all the time in a pub hahahha!) People are so friendly and always willing to help out! They are definitely my favorite part about being here!
The shopping and downtown area is beautiful too. Just like a Church Street, except bigger and in Ireland! It's so nice. Just walking around and people watching is so fun! And, going into every pub I see...there are over 600, which is about 14 a day if I want to see all of them in the time I am here, so naturally you can imagine that I have been busy! haha!
Right now I am in my incredibly comfortable bed, staring at Abby working on her computer. We are going to make dinner with a few friends tonight then go to the pubs to hear some music! Hopefully I'll be good about updating this...or else I'll have to send out emails!

Love and miss you all so much!
